Automotive Floor Jacks Types

  • Mar 13, 2009

An automotive floor jack is a tool which should be included into each and every car owner’s toolkit. Perhaps, you had got a specialized car jack when you bought your vehicle, but the thing is that they often should be replaced when lost or broken. And you should be very careful when choosing an appropriate type of a floor jack for your car, because of safety reasons.

What an automotive jack basically do is raising up a part of a car. It is often used when one needs to change a tire, but that is not the only way of using an automotive floor jack. With a typical car jack you can only raise one corner of your vehicle. For lifting the whole front or back of your car, you need a specialized one.

Automotive companies prefer to provide scissor jacks with their cars. For lifting the car up and down it utilizes the central screw mechanism. This mechanism is brought to action by a special handle (supplied with a jack) or by a simple tire removal tool.

For raising up larger cars (and trucks) another type of automotive jacks is used. It has large shift with teeth, big flat base plate and a ratcheting mechanism.

Another popular type of car jacks among car owners is a hydraulic jack. There are both wheeled and non-wheeled versions of hydraulic jacks.

Motor mechanics at automotive repair shops often use large floor jacks which are placed under the car and lift it with the help of hydraulics. Such a car jack is very helpful for lifting the entire back of a car.

Every automotive floor jack has safety features to prevent from accidents. A wide base prevents the jack from sinking into the soil or tilting. A special handle is another step to secure a car owner, although several types of jacks can be operated with a tire removal tool. A stop point on a jack helps to avoid overextending it beyond its capabilities.

Having a car jack at hand when on the road has a lot of benefits. The most important benefit is that a driver can change a tire quickly and easily in emergency without calling for assistance and paying a lot of money for this. It helps fulfilling other, not-so-emergent tasks, like changing oil, brake pads or oil as well, if you prefer to maintain your car by yourself. Taking all the above into consideration one can tell without doubt that a car jack is a very helpful tool which every car owner should have.
